Resident Evil 4
Four prototypes were abandoned before this one, and one of them became Devil May Cry. What finally shipped moved the camera over Leon’s shoulder, cut the fixed angles and tank controls the series was built on, and replaced zombies with villagers who coordinate, encircle, and throw things. Action games spent the following decade copying its camera. The PS2 conversion arrived after the GameCube original with extra content, and it runs well on PCSX2, AetherSX2, and ArmsX2.
Storyline
Leon Kennedy, now a government agent, is sent to rural Spain to recover the president’s kidnapped daughter. The village he arrives in is hostile within minutes, and its inhabitants are not infected in any way he recognises.
The plot behind it involves a parasite called Las Plagas and a cult that has been cultivating it, and the game treats this material with total sincerity while also being extremely funny. Leon’s dialogue is deadpan throughout, the merchant is an absurdity nobody explains, and the tonal balance somehow holds. It abandons the conspiracy threads of the earlier games almost entirely, which was contentious then and looks like the right call in hindsight.
Gameplay
You cannot move while aiming, and that constraint defines everything. Every engagement becomes a question of positioning before you commit — where to stand, when to stop shooting and reposition, whether a crowd can be funnelled through a doorway. Shots to the legs stagger enemies into melee range for a kick or suplex, which conserves ammunition and is the core of good play.
Resource management runs underneath it all: an attaché case of limited grid space forces choices between ammunition, healing, and weapons, and the merchant sells upgrades that make committing to a few guns better than carrying many. Set pieces punctuate the campaign — the opening village siege, the cabin defence with Luis, the castle’s mechanical traps — and the pacing rarely repeats itself across a long runtime. The PS2 version adds Separate Ways, Ada’s parallel campaign, alongside the Mercenaries score mode.
Playing Experience
The controls feel restrictive at first and become the point once you adjust; the tension comes from being unable to run and shoot, and modern remakes lose something by removing that. Escorting Ashley is the most-criticised element and remains an irritation, but the encounter design around it is strong enough to carry it. On PCSX2, AetherSX2, or ArmsX2 the PS2 build cleans up considerably at higher resolution, which helps a version originally softened to fit the hardware.
Conclusion
Few games have reshaped their genre this completely while also being this well made, and the encounter design still holds up against anything since. It is long, varied, and confident in every section. To play it you will need the PS2 firmware alongside your emulator, and a BIOS file can be downloaded here.
